Replacing Lead Water Supply Pipes: A Safer, More Reliable Installation

If your home still relies on its original lead water supply pipe, replacing it with a modern MDPE pipe is one of the most worthwhile improvements you can make. A new supply pipe restores water pressure, eliminates the health concerns associated with lead, and protects your property from the disruption and damage caused by an underground failure.

    Why Lead Pipes Are Replaced

Lead supply pipes were standard in UK housing until the 1970s. Decades on, many are still in service across the North East — but they are reaching the end of their reliable lifespan. The two main reasons homeowners choose to replace them are:

    • Health and water quality — lead can leach into drinking water, particularly when it sits in the pipe overnight
    • Reliability — internal corrosion narrows the bore, weakens joints and eventually causes leaks

A full lead pipe renewal resolves both concerns in a single, lasting fix.

What a Modern Replacement Pipe Looks Like

Today's water supply pipes are made from MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) — a tough, flexible blue plastic designed specifically for potable water. MDPE doesn't corrode, doesn't taint the water, and has an expected service life of 50 years or more. It also flexes with seasonal ground movement, which makes it far less prone to fracturing than older lead or galvanised steel pipework.

    How the Replacement Process Works

A typical lead pipe replacement at a North East home follows a clear sequence:

    • Site survey — we trace the existing supply pipe route, check the depth, and identify the boundary connection and internal stopcock
    • Route planning — the new pipe is planned along the most direct, least disruptive route
    • Trenchless installation where possible — we use moling to push the new MDPE pipe beneath driveways and lawns without open trenching
    • Connection — the new pipe is joined to the boundary box at one end and your internal stopcock at the other
    • Pressure testing — the new supply is tested before reinstatement to confirm a watertight, pressure-rated connection
    • Reinstatement — any excavated areas are backfilled and made good

Will My Driveway Be Dug Up?

In most cases, no. Moling allows us to install a new pipe under hard surfaces with only small access pits at each end. This keeps reinstatement costs low and avoids the upheaval of lifting block paving, tarmac or concrete. Where moling isn't viable — for example, where rock or other services obstruct the route — we use targeted excavation only at the points required.

    How Long Does It Take?

Most domestic lead pipe replacements are completed within a single day. Larger or longer routes, or properties with awkward access, may take a little longer. Throughout the works we keep your water supply outage as short as possible and let you know in advance when it will be off.

    Signs It's Time to Act

You don't need to wait for a burst before replacing a lead supply pipe. Common indicators include:

    • Reduced water pressure, especially at downstairs taps
    • Visible lead pipework at the internal stopcock
    • Patch repairs that have been carried out previously
    • Higher than expected water bills — a possible sign of a hidden leak

If you suspect a leak before deciding on full replacement, our underground leak detection service can confirm the problem and pinpoint its location without unnecessary excavation. Not sure if there's a leak at all? You can run a quick water meter test at home first.

Combining Replacement with a New Supply

If your property is also being upgraded — for example with a larger kitchen extension or higher-demand water appliances — it can be a good time to combine renewal with a new supply installation. Upgrading the pipe diameter at the same time gives you better flow and pressure for the long term.

    The Long-Term Benefits

A modern MDPE supply pipe delivers cleaner water, stronger pressure, and decades of reliable service. It also adds value to your property and removes one of the most common causes of unexpected emergency call-outs. For most North East homes still on lead, replacement is a one-off investment that quietly pays back for years.
