Why Lead Pipe Renewals Are Essential for North East Homeowners

Old corroded lead water supply pipes requiring renewal

Thousands of homes across the North East of England still rely on lead water supply pipes installed decades ago. While these pipes may have functioned adequately for many years, they present growing risks — both to water quality and to the reliability of your supply. If your property was built before the 1970s and the supply pipe has never been replaced, there is a strong chance it is still lead.

What Is a Lead Supply Pipe?

The supply pipe is the underground pipe that carries water from the mains connection at the boundary of your property to your internal stopcock. In older properties, this pipe was commonly installed using lead — a material that was standard at the time but is now known to present health and performance concerns.

Lead pipes can be identified by their dull grey appearance. They are soft enough to be scratched with a coin and often have a slightly swollen appearance at joints. If you're unsure whether your property has a lead supply pipe, our team can carry out a quick assessment.

    Why Lead Pipes Need Replacing

There are two primary reasons to consider replacing a lead supply pipe:

    • Water quality concerns: Lead can leach into drinking water, particularly when water sits in the pipe for long periods. While modern water treatment reduces this risk, replacing the pipe removes the concern entirely.
    • Reliability and performance: Lead pipes corrode internally over time, narrowing the bore and reducing water flow. This leads to poor water pressure, recurring leaks and eventually pipe failure.

Signs Your Lead Pipe May Be Failing

Common indicators that your lead supply pipe needs attention include:

    • Noticeably low water pressure, especially at ground floor taps
    • Recurring leaks on the supply pipe
    • Discoloured or metallic-tasting water when taps are first turned on
    • Visible lead pipework at the stopcock or boundary box
    • Previous patch repairs that keep failing
    • A property built before the 1970s with no record of pipe replacement

What Does the Renewal Process Involve?

A lead pipe renewal typically involves the following steps:

    • Survey and assessment: We inspect the existing pipe, assess its condition and plan the route for the replacement.
    • Route planning: The new pipe route is planned to minimise disruption to driveways, paths and garden areas.
    • Installation: A new MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) pipe is installed from the boundary to the property. Where possible, we use moling to avoid open trenches.
    • Connection and testing: The new pipe is connected and pressure tested to confirm a watertight seal before the ground is reinstated.

Can It Be Done Without Digging Up My Drive?

In many cases, yes. Moling is a trenchless installation method that pushes the new pipe through the ground beneath the surface. This avoids the need for open trenches across driveways, patios and garden paths — significantly reducing disruption and reinstatement costs.

Where moling isn't suitable (for example, due to obstructions or shallow rock), we use targeted excavation at specific points rather than digging the entire route.

    How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of a lead pipe renewal depends on factors including the pipe length, depth, route complexity and surface type. We provide a clear, written quotation after the initial assessment — there are no hidden charges. Many homeowners find that renewal is more cost-effective than repeated repairs on failing lead pipework.

    Is It Worth Doing Now?

If your property has a lead supply pipe and you are experiencing any of the warning signs above, renewal is strongly recommended. Even if the pipe is currently functioning, lead pipes have a finite lifespan and proactive replacement avoids the inconvenience and cost of an emergency failure.

Replacing a lead pipe also adds value to your property and provides peace of mind that your water supply is safe, reliable and fit for purpose.
