When you have an underground water leak, the traditional approach used to involve a lot of guesswork and a lot of digging. Plumbers and contractors would excavate sections of pipework based on educated estimates, often causing significant damage to driveways, gardens and flooring before finding the actual source of the problem.
At Enviro Leak, we take a completely different approach. We use acoustic correlation technology to locate underground leaks with pinpoint accuracy, all without breaking ground. Here is how it works and why it has changed the way underground leak detection is carried out across the North East.
The Science Behind the Sound
Every pressurised water pipe that develops a crack, split or joint failure produces sound. As water escapes through the breach under mains pressure, it creates vibrations that travel along the pipe wall, through the water inside, and into the surrounding ground. These sounds are often far too quiet for the human ear to detect, particularly when the pipe is buried a metre or more underground.
Acoustic correlation technology is designed to pick up and analyse these vibrations with extreme precision. It allows us to not only confirm that a leak exists, but to calculate exactly where along the pipe it is located.
How We Use It on Site
The process is straightforward and completely non-invasive.
We begin by identifying two accessible points on the pipework, usually the external stop tap and an internal connection point or a second access fitting. We attach a sensor to each of these points — highly sensitive listening devices that pick up the sound waves travelling through the pipe.
Both sensors transmit their data wirelessly to a handheld correlator unit. The correlator analyses the signals from both ends of the pipe simultaneously, comparing the time it takes for the leak sound to reach each sensor. Because sound travels at a known speed through a given pipe material (copper, plastic, iron and so on), the correlator can calculate the distance from each sensor to the leak source.
The result is a precise location, typically accurate to within a few centimetres, marked directly on the ground above the pipe.
Why This Matters for Homeowners
The benefit to you as a homeowner or property manager is significant. Without this technology, finding an underground leak often means trial-and-error excavation. A contractor might dig up a section of your driveway or patio, find nothing, and move on to the next best guess. Each dig costs money, takes time and causes disruption that then needs to be repaired.
With acoustic correlation, we identify the location before any ground is opened up. This means the repair team can go straight to the right spot, carry out a targeted repair, and minimise the disruption to your property. In many cases, the total excavation needed is no larger than a small square metre — and where a full new supply is required, we can often complete the work using moling instead of open trenching.
What About Different Pipe Materials?
One of the advantages of correlation technology is that it works across a range of pipe materials. The speed of sound varies between copper, MDPE plastic, cast iron, lead and other materials, and modern correlator units are calibrated to account for these differences. During our assessment, we confirm the pipe material and length between access points so the correlator can deliver the most accurate reading possible.
Plastic pipes can be slightly more challenging because they absorb more sound energy than metal alternatives. However, advances in sensor sensitivity and signal processing mean that even leaks on plastic mains supply pipes can be located reliably. For older lead supply pipes, acoustic correlation is often the fastest way to confirm a failure and plan renewal work.
A Non-Invasive Process From Start to Finish
The entire detection process is carried out from above ground. There is no digging, no drilling and no disruption to your property during the survey. We simply need access to two points on the pipe run, a clear understanding of the pipe route (which we can often trace using pipe locating equipment), and enough time to carry out the correlation readings.
Most residential assessments are completed within a couple of hours, and you receive a clear report detailing the findings, including the identified leak location, so you can move forward with a targeted repair.
